Bee box

I took it upon myself to create this bee box.

Based on existing examples found through various websites, I made a basic box frame from scrap wood at the bottom of the garden. This was then simply packed with branches cut similar sizes, and drilled with holes ranging from about 5 – 10 mm.

Not only will this (hopefully) attract solitary bees to nest, but also other beneficial insects such as lacewings and ladybirds. I put the box up near our strawberry patch, in a sheltered spot facing south (as advised). I intend to make at least another one of these, perhaps, however with a bit more effort and craft.

I am doubtful that any of the holes will be nested in this year, as I may have left it a little too late, though I guess i’ll just wait and see.
